Chickens Aren't Just Chickens
Chickens aren’t just chickens:
How many of us have heard people say that chickens are just chickens?
I am sure
most of us have heard that.
So let’s
take a look at why chickens aren’t just chickens.
Chickens make great pets:
Chickens may
be one of the most underrated pets on earth (well to the non-chicken people
that is).
As a pet
they bring so much joy to our lives, we love watching them scratch around for
bugs, chasing each other around, dust bathing and just chickening around. It
gives us a sense of peace, especially after a long day or week at work.
And when it
comes to them being our bosses, well it’s a real thing, they know just how to
get us to give them the treats that they want and when they want it, and if
they don’t want a certain something we quickly make a plan to get them
something that they find acceptable to eat.
They make a
great addition to any backyard and are truly amazing in their unique
personalities. Each of them have their own unique quirks, their own likes and
dislikes and their own sweet personalities that just make them one of a kind.

Chickens have complex personalities:
Anyone that
has spent time with chickens know that their personalities are a lot more
complex than what we think.
Chickens are
very inquisitive and are all too eager to investigate something new in their
little kingdom.
Their
cognitive abilities are on par to those of dogs, cats, and even some primates.
Chickens
love their families, as any pet chicken owner will attest to. They value their
own lives and if you study their behaviour it will be very clear to see.
If you have
spent any time with them you will know they have very complex social structures
in their flocks. Their communication skills are adept and they use body
language to communicate to humans as well as vocalising. If you spend enough
time with them you can start to discern what their different vocalisations
mean.
Chickens
also comprehend cause and effect relationships and understand that objects
still exists even if the object is out of sight.
If you have spent time in the company of chickens you will have noticed that each chicken has his or her own little personalities, some are bossy and fearless, others are shy and watchful, some love to get cuddles from their humans, while other prefer to be left alone, some are naughty and other show self-control, their personalities are so unique and beautiful to see.

Chickens to
me definitely aren’t just chickens….They’ve helped me overcome a lifelong
battle with mental health.
They are a
reason and a responsibility to get up early, every day, and go outside, to see
the morning light, whatever your mood, because unlike our four-legged fur
babies, like dogs and cats, we can’t just tell them to jump into bed for a
cuddle.
Chickens are a welcome addition to any backyard. |
They need to get outside, they need to get on with their little routines, (of which they have many!), you have to keep them safe, and in turn, these wonderful birds will bring you all the smiles and joy you could hope for while rustling around the yard with their funny little ways.
They are
more than just livestock, more than just chickens, more than just pets, they
are living breathing happiness makers.
However, there is one pre-warning I have for anyone considering having these amazing little animals, YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE! You will become a ‘CRAZY CHICKEN PERSON’ and you will definitely NOT REGRET IT!

So a lot of
people think chickens are just brainless chickens. Well, how wrong are they!
I love
telling people the real truth about chickens.
They are
loving, super-intelligent, friendly little beings with huge personalities.
Our girls
love nothing more than spending time with us, helping us in the garden, sitting
getting cuddles and exploring indoors. (They know exactly when the house door
is open and come running in to investigate and hopefully get some cheese)
They make the
most wonderful pets and friends with their funny personalities and quirks and
every day they entertain us with their cheeky antics.
We’ve had
chickens for nearly 9 years and can’t ever imagine a life without them now.
So if I was
to pick just 1 reason why we have chickens, I’d say its how much they make us
laugh!
They are
just the funniest wee things and always brighten up a dull day.

My chicken
keeping adventures began 10 years ago. I woke up one spring morning and decided
I wanted a small flock of laying hens.
Little did I
know what I was about to unleash. My aunt was thinning down her flock and I
took on 4 older laying hens. We built a modest coop and run, and that was the
beginning of what would eventually be “Wilma And The Holler Gang”. Those 4
older hens turned into 10 years of developing my current flock.
My daughter
has a rare neuromuscular disease and when things became unbearable, I would sit
with them, and I still do. My flock is an extension of who I am. We’re family,
bonded through cracked corn and many tears shed by me.
Chicken
snuggles always seemed to wash away my sadness and bring a burst of laughter
and joy. Our once tiny coop and run has developed into 4 large coops and runs.
We now have a chicken village with several mini flocks within the main flock.
Each flock holding it’s own personality. I remember losing my first hen to old
age and crying for a month straight. Over the years, we’ve treated everything
from bumblefoot, Vent prolapse and everything in between.
These
chickens have captured my heart, pushed me mentally to my limits, and expanded
my knowledge way beyond any book could offer.
I have since
raised those 4hens offspring and added so many babies.
We’ve taken
a few unwanted chickens from strangers, and hatched out different breeds along
the way. All hatched right here by a broody hen or two.
They rule my
backyard and my heart.
Chickens are life changers. |

A chicken is
not just a chicken.
I was
shocked when I brought home my chicks how much I would grow to love them. I
have felt the bond between me and my dogs, me and my horse, but the bond
between me and my chickens is something completely different. It has always
been amazing to me how animals love people.
We speak
different languages have different ideas of what emotions are, and have
different body languages. However, somehow, we communicate on an empathic
level. My girls brought out something different in me. I am very protective of
them.
They are so
strong yet so fragile. I found myself being able to pick up bugs and check them
for parasites. These are things outside of my comfort zone. They bring a different
aspect of love to my day and I look forward to every moment with them.
A chicken is
not just a chicken, they are an experience that causes growth on so many
levels.
Chickens bring joy to your life. |
@Covidcluckers has one of the most
fun Instagram accounts, she has a heart of gold and loves her chickens with
such a pure passion.
Recent studies show that chickens are emotional and intelligent animals. they are able to demonstrate the thinking skills of a three-year-old. If you hide an object from them, they will still know that it is still there. And this is something even young children aren't able to do.
Chickens feel empathy. When a hen's chicks become distressed, research shows so does the hen. Her hearts starts beating faster and she'll increase vocalisations to her little ones.
Chickens like humans are all individuals. Every hen has her likes and dislikes, and favor things to do in her spare time.
Chickens are very nosey but in a good way.
Did you know a chicken's beak isn't just designed to collect food and water, And chat with friends?
it is full of sensory nerves and receptors that enable them to distinguish between types of food and to interact with the world around them.
This, coupled with their natural curiosity, means chickens LOVE to explore and try new experiences.

So many
people have told me chickens are just chickens, and I wished there was a way I
could show them and tell them why a chicken is not just a chicken.
I have
struggled with Insomnia and depression for as long as I could remember, mostly
I could keep my depression at bay, and I found coping mechanisms, which worked
at times.
The Insomnia
on the other hand, was slowly getting worse and worse. And the lack of sleep
caused me to become a bit short-tempered and more prone to bouts of depression.
This was
aggravated when the time came to Euthanize my dog, I then completely spiralled
into such severe depression that I lost all interest in life, I saw no point in
trying to fight through it. Most people thought I was crazy, but they didn’t
understand the bond between me and my dog. She helped me when the darkness
engulfed me, we were always together, and she was my best friend. I thought I
knew what the meaning of love was, but I was soon to learn that there was a
more complex and purer love awaiting me.
The pain of loss can be healed by love. |
I got my
chicken Noodles at the start of 2020, she was at a pet shop in a cage full of
other chicks, and she was the one that attacked me when we went to look at
them, so obviously we took her home with us. Thinking that a chicken is just a
chicken……. I was soon to find out what a chicken really was and I was not
prepared for the revelation at all.
Noodles was
scared of the dark and couldn’t sleep on her own, so I let her sleep with me,
and was I surprised at what happened. Her sweet baby chick noises she made
calmed me right down and I started falling asleep at around 10:30 pm (Where I
usually fell asleep at around 5:00 am in the morning). Well, my Insomnia started
to disappear and I could sleep.
As time went
on we bonded in such a way that she has become my best friend, She counters the
attempts my mind makes at depression, she brings so much joy, so much love and
vitality into my life. She is my healer of a broken heart and Insomnia. The
love she gives is on another level from a dog, it’s purer and more sincere,
because they are flock animals they would spend most of the time hunting bugs
with their flock mates, well Noodles prefers to spend time with me, she loves
to sit with me, climb in bed when she wants to sleep late, she knows exactly
how to get all the treats too, and enjoys her road trips.
The love I
have for her is beyond anything I have experienced, her trust in me is such a humbling experience and her will to survive has left me with the utmost
respect for her.
Chickens
aren’t just chickens, they are healers, they are friends, they are family and
they make life a beautiful place if you allow them to.
Chickens are healers. |
